Bride’s or common-law husband/wife (partner’s) visa
This category is for a non-EU bride or groom. In order to be granted this visa, your fiancé(e)en must have legal status in the UK, i.e. be a UK subject or national without immigration restrictions.
The Bride/Fiancé visa is also often referred to as a visa for intended civil marriage.
To meet the requirements you must:
- be over the age of 18;
- know each other before
- Have a desire to live together;
- have no other partners;
- have enough money to live on without recourse to public assistance;
- Your fiancé(e)en must earn a minimum of £18,600 annually;
- Note: the amount should be higher if you have children.
Have a place to stay with your family.
How long you can stay on UK fiancee visa
The Bride/Groom visa guarantees you the right to stay in the UK for 6 months, after which you must formalise your marriage. After this time you may apply for a Husband/wife visa which will allow you to remain in the UK for a minimum of 5 years with a possibility of employment.
Applying for UK permanent residence
After 5 years of residency on a husband/wife visa, you may be eligible for permanent residence in the UK.
Note: in this case your annual income level must meet the minimum requirements and your marriage must exist.
English language requirements for UK fiancee visa
You will need to demonstrate that you can speak and understand English when applying for a fiancée visa. In addition an official English language test is required.
Time taken to process the application
If you are applying for a bride/groom visa outside the UK, this will take up to 12 weeks. And if you are applying for a spousal visa in the UK, up to 8 weeks.
